In what is called as the “biggest attack in the history of independent India on the autonomy of our universities“, the Ministry of Education has released guidelines seriously curbing academic freedom in the country.

Which Way Is The Wind Blowing For Consumer Law?
“There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says “Morning, boys. How’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes “What the hell is water?”
This line by David Foster Wallace, pulled out from his famous speech ‘This Is Water‘, reminds one of some areas of law as well.
Often while considering their career options, students think about practice areas such as company law, arbitration, international law, but often miss on the cases which can be the building block of their legal practice.
Consumer Law is one such area.
Things Beyond the Law Firm Job: By Shamnad Basheer
Many of us have lamented the fact that although the “national law schools” have churned out very gifted lawyers, we’ve lost many of them to law firms. It is but natural that many of them are attracted to financially rewarding jobs that law firms typically guarantee.
However, given that these law schools were established to induce alternative forms of lawyering aimed at improving society, we have to admit that there has been a failure of sorts…and a massive one at that.
